With Stones

The gemstones can be Genuine, Lab-created, Imitation, or a combination. The birthstones come in different sizes and shapes. The ring picture above is separated with diamonds or CZ’s. The bracelet on the top right has heart shaped stones. (Some of the pictures above are unset examples.)

Engraved

Pieces may be engrave with individual names or nicknames. Some of the examples above are engravable. They may or may not come with birthstones.

An alternate August birthstone is Spinel. The name “spinel” comes from the Latin word spina, which means thorn (the shape of spinel crystals). It can come in colors: red, pink, orange, purple, violet, blue and bluish green. Sardonyx is the original August birthstone, with a history that dates back more than 4,000 years. It has two types of the mineral chalcedony that is a reddish gemstone striped with white bands.

Alexandrite is the rare variety of chrysoberyl that changes color in different lighting. It is green/blue-green in daylight and red/purple in artificial incandescent light. It is named after Czar Alexander II and was discovered in 1830 in the Urals. A high-quality stone is one of the most expensive gemstones. It is used for celebrating 18th wedding anniversaries.

Moonstone is the best-known gem of the feldspar group of minerals. It is renowned for its white shimmer of light that appears to move across the gemstone, similar to moonlight. It is a 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness. They are colorless with a pale, white, or blue sheen.

Cultured pearls can be found in a wide variety of shapes, colors and sizes. The color of a pearl varies with the type of mullusk and the water. They can be white, cream, silver, pink, peach, green, blue, brown, and black. Black and brown Tahitian pearls are cultured in French Polynesia. Akoya pearls are primarily cultured in Japan and China farms. South Sea cultured pearls are farmed from the northern coast of Australia through Indonesia and the Philippines to the southern coast of Southeast Asia.

Pearls are 2.5 to 3.0 on the Mohs Scale of hardness. They are very compact, but a soft gem that requires special care. Store them separately from other gemstones and metal jewelry to prevent scratching. Never store in a plastic bag since plastic can emit a chemical that will damage their surface. Apply perfume, hair products and cosmetics before putting on your pearl jewelry. The best way to clean is to use a soft, damp cloth, ideally after each time the pearls are worn.

Mother-of-Pearl (“mother of the pearl”) is the iridescent nacreouse layer of the shell. It is basically white with the natural dark coming from Tahiti. The Mother-of-Pearl of New Zealand’s Paua abalone is iridescent blue and green.
